The Shoalhaven economy is characterized by a manufacturing sector with significant export markets. Proximity to Sydney has enticed a range of international companies to establish in the area, covering a diverse range of manufactured products, including foodstuffs, paper, automotive parts, chemicals, building products etc.

The defence industry is also quite significant in the area with two military bases, HMAS Albatross and HMAS Creswell, being located within the Shoalhaven area. The main military activity conducted in the area is rotary wing aviation for the Royal Australian Navy and this has attracted a range of defence contractors that provide logistics and maintenance support, as well as expertise in electronic warfare and systems integration software for military purposes.

A sophisticated range of professional services also exist in the area, including accounting, engineering, law, environmental planning, human resources and the like.
